In case you couldn't tell from the portrait of Dolly Parton I have tattooed on my thigh, I'm a big country music fan. And not just hipster-approved pre-’80s country, but a lot of modern stuff too.
I love the Dixie Chicks, I love Miranda Lambert and The Pistol Annies, I love Brandy Clark. I love any song where women sing about possibly murdering a dude who done them wrong. And I love that Canadian country star Kira Isabella just released a song and video describing a campus sexual assault and the aftermath, including the Internet smear campaign that has lately become a repulsive coda to these incidents.Entitled "Quarterback," the song repeats the refrain: "Who you gonna blame, the star of the game or the no-name girl in the freshman class?"
This is a song that would have meant a lot to me as a young girl growing up in the home state of Toby Keith, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire and Carrie Underwood. Isabella doesn't seem to be very big in America yet, but with an album coming out later this year, I hope she manages to infiltrate the U.S. country market. Her song and video seem tailor-made for mainstream country -- except, of course, for the subject matter.
