Brighten Up Your Autumn With Colourful Outerwear

Why not be the pop of pink, blue or orange in the sea of black and grey parkas this winter?

There's really no way to dance around it: winter is just plain depressing (at least in places like Toronto where it gets super cold... shut up California people!) Everything dies, wind tunnels form between massive condo complexes, and something as simple as going outside to go grocery shopping can turn into a painful mission.

True, we get Autumn first, one of my favourite seasons, but even then I find the city just loses all of its colour and excitement.

Don't get me wrong, I love walking around parks in the orange leaves with a pumpkin spice in my hand as much as the next person, but what I really hate is how dark and drab everyone gets when the season changes. The hoards of people on the streets once decked out in floral 5-panel hats and brightly coloured shorts all at once seem to switch over to the least fun colour of all: black.

Yes, I know black is practical and the easiest to keep clean and blah blah blah, but sometimes it can also be just plain depressing, and with the winter blues already creeping in (for me anyway), is the colour reserved for funerals really the best choice? Nope, I don't think so.

Sorry for my non-wintery outfit... it got so hot here all of the sudden this week!

Nothing brightens up my winter days like cute, colourful outerwear. To be fair, i also have my practical black and navy coats, but I always feel that little bit more happy and cheerful when I reach for my peach ASOS jacket (top right in the shopping grid below, and in these pics!) or my cream Wilfred cocoon coat.

Growing up I did a lot of snowboarding, and whenever I got to upgrade my gear I'd always beg my mom for the brightest colour in the shop, doing my best to convince her that i wouldn't get sick of that neon orange jacket or blue snowboard. I just found that all that bright colour really helped me stay positive in the bleak cold on the mountain, and I guess I've carried that mentality over to my black and gray surrounded city life here.

This Autumn, for the sake of my mental health and yours, why not invest in a fun, bright coloured jacket? I promise it will make whatever poler vortex is in store this year just a little bit more bearable.

ASOS, $170, Topshop, $158, ASOS, $170, ASOS Curve, $140, Oasis via ASOS, $180, Forever21, $59

What team are you on, bright colour or dark shades?
