My boyfriend and I have been starting to get really serious lately, discussing marriage, kids, etc. But we’ve run into a problem. When it comes to girls’ names, we have agreed on a few and that wasn’t too difficult. However, when it comes to a boy’s name, we absolutely cannot agree. He was raised Catholic and because of this, wants to name his son after him. I was raised Jewish and think that’s a really stupid idea. I love the idea of passing along someone’s name to a new child. (I plan on using the first letter of my recently passed grandpa in my child’s name somehow; I think that is an amazing way to remember your loved ones). However, I think it’s very silly to name someone the exact same as you. I think it takes away a child’s individuality, and it is just a bad tradition. Like I said, we come from very different backgrounds, but we seem to be able to compromise on everything else. But I don’t see how we will be able to agree on this. He refuses to name his son anything other than his exact name, and there is no way I am going to do that to my child. How can we reach an agreement?
